The Lennox PureAir air cleaner seems to be lacking clear definition of its features. No information can be found concerning filter efficiency, other than the filter being rated at MERV 16. No test reports are provided for ultra-violet or PCO features either.
Filters rated at MERV 16 are able to attain 95% efficiency down to 0.3 microns. As far as Lennox claiming that their air cleaner is capable of capturing particle sizes down to 0.01 microns is pure marketing. The fact of the matter is, if you put a single strand of human hair in your furnace filter slot, it would be capable of capturing a particle the size of 0.01 microns.
The addition of the ultra-violet lights offer a means of killing live viruses, bacteria, mold spores, etc. This unit is a close competitor to the Electro Breeze Duct Mount UV kit by incorporating the UV lights and photocatalyst. The Lennox lamps are only effective for one year and cost about $30 each.
The filter is capable of lasting up to one year, so the replacement of bulbs and filter will be annual. The cost for the Lennox PureAir air cleaner annual kit is in the neighborhood of $145, while the cost for the Electro Breeze Duct Mount UV kit will be around $70 each year.
One characteristic of filters that is often overlooked while trying to extend the life of a filter is the effects of overloading a filter. This results in too much pressure drop, putting a strain on your blower and possibly damaging your air handling unit.
Frequent filter changes are actually better for your equipment and with the low cost of replacement pads from Electro Breeze, you will enjoy clean air and longer life of your equipment without breaking the budget.
The cost for the Lennox PureAir air cleaner ($3,000) plus the cost of a licensed contractor to modify your duct work to have it installed, can easily exceed the cost of purchasing the Electro Breeze Duct Mount UV kit.
We would not recommend the Lennox PureAir air cleaner as the best solution for improving your indoor air quality.
